Sounds a funny heading but it is an emotion to be questioned. Why do we need freedom? In order to understand more lets say we don't need Freedom. This implies that I am slave. Now this is a relative term, so slave of what?, Slave of a state where the ruler is dictator, a slave of a community or religion, a slave of perfection or art and lots more. This makes me distracted. You may say freedom from everything mentioned above but it is contradictory. If I want a freedom from religion, I will leave Hinduism and accept Islam but what I did is, mere change of shackles. It means that I had shackles of steel but now they are of Gold. The point is they are still there. So I just changed masters.
So getting FREEDOM FROM.. is the problem. When ever we try to get freedom from some something we are inviting another trap to get caught in. If you ask a spiritual guru the same question they will have a very nice answer. The world is maya and renunciation is the path to achieve Freedom. Stop loving, hating and you will find god. But this seems ridiculous. How can you stop loving and find God when all scriptures say that through love you find god. The stress point becomes you choose either renunciation or world. For me renunciation is death. If I have no human emotions like love, happiness, hate then I am not human. So to become free absolutely I have to die.
The riddle ends if I start watching things than actually thinking on it. The question is why do we want freedom. May be there is a action which makes us uncomfortable and so we need a reaction to balance it. May be not..

Nice post. Here are my thoughts on freedom.
Being a human, it is by default that we have emotions. Emotions like happiness, sadness, possessiveness... Detaching yourself from these emotions is renunciation. It is something like "I am happy to get this 'thing', but my happiness does not depend on that 'thing'. We are contended with 'being'.
When we say freedom, I look at it as "freedom" from our own weeknesses and the traps laid by them. We need not bring religion to define freedom.
Man is a free animal. He shapes his life on the basis of his own free-will.
Reaching to the state of contentment is essentially gaining freedom, 'freedom from your expectations of things or beings'.
I think the earlier comment can explain the meaning of freedom but the point is WHY do we need it???
ha ha ....nice at least you realized you are not free..good this is the first step towards freedom.
I must say u shud hav your guru completely. When he said stop loving and hating, he ment the worldly materialistic things. When you are in the search of GOd or whatever you wud like to call the nature, the almighty ...you are in love with god. And finally u'll see that god is in everything so u'll start loving every thing. The worldly love is momentary or atleast for a life but spiritual love lasts for ever as it is the part of the soul.
By the way: Guru govind khare ka ke laagun pyen!!
Guru balihari aapne govind diyo batyen!!
Thus, it is imp to have a worthy guru to guide you.
hmm..good blog on freedom..
As us say and saurab said...emotions are default to human and we cannot get out of them.
What I say about freedom..freedom from what?..in today world no one is free...every one is slave of something...someone of money someone of love someone of hate etc.
and where is GOD..can anyone tell me...all sainta today are tarvelling in high class cars..travellling all over the world to tell people to stop thinking about money, about love just think of GOD...while they are enjoying all the high class pleasure.
The worldly love is momentary or atleast for a life but spiritual love lasts for ever as it is the part of the soul.
..and assuming that you have lived for "ever" to determine that spiritual love and soul live for ever, the limits(of a moment and a "tiny" 80 or so years of living) that you put on the material love is extremely derogatory for us mere mortals who really do just have "one life to live" and cater to the belief that love is no different...whether it is spiritual or material. :-D
Don't you think so?
As usual one more nice posting from u.some of my thoughts...
I feel there are two kinds of freedom.one which we can see.phyiscal one and other one is intellectual.when it comes to human being, he is always binded in the shackles of materialistic things.it could be in form of slavery to a ruler or obligations of religions. It may be passion obession of earning money or getting everything for ur beloved ones. they are just kind of dictators which tries to redirect ur life in a way which probably u wont like.but these is not parmanent.a single revolt can help to get rid of this.
But intellect freedom is some thing which can not be achieved in a day or two...first of all, as u human being, when u got brain n heart both, u can not emotions. only thing u can control is ur desires...desires are the one which leads u to a path which u shouldnt follow...if you can control your desirs or at least limit them, it may helps to keep your mind free from worries...
where it comes abt god. god is everywhere, in everyone and nowhere in no one..its all up to how u take up the things.... nothing can help in achieving other than u...u have to make rules and follow them...coz finally u made them.... so u r free...
Why man needs freedom...
Well, this is a very very interesting question to ask...
You ask a bird in a cage, what is its deepest desire - it will tell you to fly away from the cage, to "be free".
When you are challenged by a problem that is difficult to solve and it taking up your resources, you desire to be "free".
Even when there is a person who does not have the best health and suffers from pain, seeks to be "free from pain".
Freedom is essentially a state of things that a human perceives. It does not have a "yes/no" truth value to it. It is biased. That is why it is called "maya". Our own veil of ignorance shows us different picture from what others see it.
That is why I mentioned "freedom" from our own weaknesses (inability to identify that we aren't slaves)..
Also "love" is a feeling - not an emotion..:)
hmmmm well u know m very bad whn it comes to words but still let me try ... :)
well according to me freedom is a state of mind.......whn u love or u enjoy wht u do....u never feel so...and when u dont feel pleasure in ur work or any xyz thing u do....u name it..."i am trapped....and now wht i want is MY freedom"
for example people spend there lives together...for years....either happily or compromisingly but mnay a times a relation once which meant the world to u suddenly starts suffocating u ...n thn u say i want my freedom..........so this is wht it is all about...:socho toh sub kuch hai, nahi socho toh, kuch bhi nahi....."
and as far as its about finding god...well its no where but in every humans soul, mind, heart, feelings etc.....one always pays for wht he/she does in their live for good/bad....coz this is where heaven resides and this is where hell resides...its upto a human to do his/her karma and shape his/her life into good/bad...heaven/hell
Well I appreciate most of the comments but the crux still is same. For example some of talked about the bird in cage and its need for freedom but why? May be if the bird gets her freedom, after a while, she may realize that its no that she really looked for. May be it will add more misery to her life by protecting herself from being prey, struggling for food etc. So now she struggles to get free from these new ventures. The point is that once define freedom and achieve it, its not all. Its a trap that you lay for defining another Freedom and it goes on.
Gostei muito desse post e seu blog é muito interessante, vou passar por aqui sempre =) Depois dá uma passada lá no meu site, que é sobre o CresceNet, espero que goste. O endereço dele é http://www.provedorcrescenet.com . Um abraço.
So the question drills down to how do we know when we have achieved all the freedom possible. I guess till all the desires to be free are satisfied. Note that if we consider the bird in a cage example, you can say that the bird may be happy being free in the air and it may face difficulties arising from a different need, not necessarily the need for freedom..you can compare this to a child, it will ask for a chocolate, you give it to him, he will be happy..then by eating chocolates he faces some struggle (cavities in teeth, for eg), but he is still happy that he could be granted that desire to eat a chocolate. Now his desire itself has changed to be of a new kind, to be free from teeth cavities. So WHY? ANYTHING, the simple answer to it is: Somewhere we have a desire to get that emotion fulfilled. Not that it is the right one for us, but we believe that it will give us happiness. Since we aren't able to perceive what is true happiness, we tend to get happiness from either material things or some kind of struggle.
